About the project

Capital cities are always stealing the spotlight. The UK is no exception; London has long been ranked as one of the world’s top startup ecosystems. But Cambridge, Bristol, Edinburgh and Oxford are amongst Europe’s top cities for investment, and Manchester is Europe’s fastest-growing tech city. Created in partnership with Microsoft for Startups, the UK Startup Explorer uses data to highlight the diversity of 21 of the UK’s biggest startup hubs. Click around to learn about investment, talent, quality of life and more in each region.

How to use the map
Investment in tech companies
This is the base view of the map. Each region is composed of dots. The size of the dots represents the value of regional investment in tech companies in 2020, ranging from £50m to over £1b.
Startup ecosystem
The 'startup ecosystem' panel shows the number of universities, accelerators and coworking spaces per region. More lines = more facilities!
Tech sectors
Use the ‘tech sectors’ panel to explore regional investment per sector in 2020. Select up to three sectors to compare. The grey dots represent other tech investment or non-tech sector investment. Hint: you can use the ‘startup ecosystem’ filters at the same time!
Tooltip
When hovering over a region, a tooltip box appears in the top right corner with total regional investment and regional investment per sector. It also shows the major cities which can be ‘zoomed in’ on to explore further.
Regional view
Click on a UK region to ‘zoom in’ on the region’s major cities. You can again use the ‘tech sectors’ panel to explore investment per sector in 2020 on a city level. Select up to three sectors to compare.
Regional panel
The regional panel includes detailed information on the local startup ecosystem using data visualisations, such as the area’s active companies per tech sector, local investment over the last five years, average salaries for digital tech roles and more.
